Home Office Design Board

March 21, 2019

Since starting the blog, I have been spending a good portion of the time while the kids are school (and some evenings, I’m quite the novice so everything takes twice as long), working on the computer at our kitchen counter. Which would work fine in most situations, but our kitchen was designed by people who fancied themselves to be above-average height, and custom-built the cabinets to be 2 inches taller than standard. As someone who is right smack in the “average” category when it comes to height, this leads to me working at my laptop in a constant state of shrugged shoulders. So we decided to take the sitting area in our master bedroom (which is currently housing our guest bed — yes, we make our guests sleep in the same room as us, lest they try to stay too long, haha!), and turn it into an office space. My husband has a flexible work arrangement, and would also like the option of working at home, so making this space an office is something we have been thinking about for some time. But with both of us now in need, it has turned into a higher priority. Of course, since this will be a “his” and “hers” space, I tried to take his style into consideration and not have it look quite as pink and feminine as some of the other spaces in our home.

Below are two photos I found inspiring for the design, and if you’re interested, more inspiration is here at my Pinterest “home office” board.

And here is the mood board I created to start budgeting around. I tried to use some navy blues and deeper hues, and also brought in a couple hits of leather to toughen it up;). It is by no means going to be mistaken for a gentlemen’s study, but I thought it was a good compromise. You’re welcome, sweetie.

So the plan is to finish a couple hundred square feet in our basement to turn it into a space for our kiddos to play, and our guests to sleep. And once that is done, we can relocate the guest bed and really get the ball rolling on this plan. We’re hoping that will take place in the next month or so, but we tend to under estimate how long things take, so I’ll give it two months. Wish us luck!!!
