Sore Throat Elixir

March 11, 2019

Spring is officially just a week and a half away, and our family could not be more ready! Even our five-year-old, Coen, tells us regularly that he wants to move to Florida to be in the warm weather!?! We keep reminding him that living in Wisconsin is all about the long game, and he’ll be happy he put up with the -20 degree days, come summer.

In the meantime, we have been taking turns with coughs and sore throats for the past several months, so when I recently came across an immune-boosting recipe in the Spring issue of Magnolia Journal, I thought it was worth a try. It is a mix of fresh ginger and turmeric (both great for fighting inflammation and the bad bacteria from cold/flu bugs), along with apple cider vinegar, lemon, cinnamon and honey. We use Manuka honey to get even more anti-bacterial goodness. I have been making this for the last several weeks and drink some in my tea almost every evening. It really helps soothe my sore throat and makes it easier to fall asleep. I do typically still wake back up with a sore throat since the air is so, so dry in our house right now, so I might start making myself a cup in the morning too.

Tea cup // Earthenware Tray // Hand Towel // Spoon (similar)

For the recipe, I didn’t follow their proportions exactly, so here’s an idea of how much of each ingredient I typically use:

Let the ingredients meld in the fridge overnight, which will thin out the honey. This keeps really well in the refrigerator too, for up to around two weeks, but mine usually doesn’t last that long anyway.

Any other tips and tricks we should be trying to stay well? Other than just waiting it out and hiding under my covers until Spring comes?!? Leave any suggestions below in the comments, I’d love to hear them!!
